I appreciate it seems obvious but under heavy braking I'm getting judder through the steering wheel but under light braking there's no judder. Before I invest in new discs etc is there another reason that could cause the steering wheel shake? By the way, the wheels are balanced okay.

Thanks in anticipation.

Graham.

I get this, only way I can describe it is... it’s like when I press the brake I get a kidder and the more load I put on it the worse it gets and it feels like it does when the wheel balancing is out but it doesn’t do it when I’m driving only when I brake. Is yours the same?

Your front brake discs will be warped, usually it means new discs if it’s bad but can be machined sometimes, it might not be too bad if it’s fine under low load,
I had it on my old golf r and went ahead with new rotors
Hope that helps

If the discs only judder under heavy/high speed braking i doubt there warped as there would also judder under light braking as well.

It can be a uneven brake pad builded up on the disc face which i've had after driving around at low speed a lot,

I found that after braking very very hard from high speed seem to cure it for a short time.

After burning out a set off front ebc reds & boiling the brake fluid at Castle Combe a few years back it never warped the discs, likewise for another forum member who still has the same discs to this day.

I had a phenomena off getting a wobble through the steering wheel as if the wheels were out of balance bang on at 80mph would not happen at 79 or 81 mphs.🤔

After carrying out a high speed very hard braking it would clear for a short time.

Make sure the vent holes are clear and follow the bedding in procedure again as it may just be residue build up as Dell said.

If it’s still there then you’ve warped the discs. I’ve been told many times it’s very hard to warp these discs however I’ve found I’d done a set on the RS3 and a set on the RS4 all on the road. Now a bit paranoid with the RS6 and doing any track sessions.

Gents,

Thanks for the responses. Looks like it's the discs according to the responses. If I get them machined i suppose it will need new pads as they will be out of kilter with the discs?

That said by skimming the discs wouldn't it reduce their effectiveness?

Thanks again.

Graham.

If your discs were warped you would also feel through the brake pedal a pulsing due to the warped discs pushing the pads back into the caliper mate.

I’ve heard mixed reviews about skimming discs so let us know how you get on.

I used to get terrible steering wheel vibration with Red Stuff pads on the 8P RS3.

They’d leave deposits on the discs and the only way to cure it was washing the discs then it would be fine for a couple of days of driving.
I binned em because they were / are a rubbish pad, even for just daily use they were shocking.

Red stuff were the only pad that I tested which did this.

  1. I Had the same problem after i fitted new pads and drove for a while, solution was pretty easy ... took pads out and then sanded them on a flat surface using some sandpaper ... nice rough sand paper ... fitted them and all was cool, no more vibrations.
