The one option I regret not getting when I ordered my car was the Matt Aluminium Styling Pack. I've seen many examples on the RS3OC site with it fitted so I've decided to retro fit it to my Daytona Grey using Vinyl Wrap. 3M's 1080 series of wrap seems to be the best that money can buy so I've asked a local signing/wrapping to assess the job and give me a price. I should get the estimated price from him tomorrow.

If you are interested, watch this post and I will provide details and updates as they happen. I'll get some photos of the before, during and after fitted so you can see the process and the end result.

For info, the option cost in the RS3 brochure was £680 inc. vat.

Photo of the current state of the car attached.

Hope to update you tomorrow with estimated cost.

I personally wouldn't ' wrap again, it doesn't last long until it starts looking scruffy, and watch out when power washing!

I'm sure a good body shop could paint it?

The Alu pack looks great on Daytona Grey it really compliments the two tone titanium coloured wheels{I've got it on mine},don't forget to do the underneath of the tailgate spoiler I've met two people who have, after having the wrap done and seeing mine then realising it is also part of the Alu pack.IMG_0601-Version2_zps70b653e1.jpg

So, today's update:

I went to the Vinyl man and he was quite enthusiastic about doing it and was very interested in the car and wheels too! He has ordered the 3M 1080 samples and will get back to me when he gets them and will give me a price for the job lot. He said that he will make templates for each part and then wrap them.

As an aside I also rang my local Audi centre who were quick to get back to me with:

The front splitter has the same part number as the existing part on the vehicle, so would just require painting along with the trims on the rear spoiler.

Audi’s paint code for the splitter and spoiler is L AP6.

A rough guess for painting the front splitter and rear spoiler trims I should think would be around £150 as a guide

Four door handle trims with Matt Aluminium strip £152.64 inc vat

Paint for door handle trims £72.00 inc vat

If parts were painted altogether as one job I would think maybe considerably cheaper.

I can recommend Mike Dobson’s Body Shop next to The Derby Arms at Witherslack for a more exact quote, his telephone number is 015395 52029. Hope this is of help

Many thanks

Lake District Audi

So, it would probably work out around £400 based on the info above, a little cheaper than I expected. I don't quite understand why I would need 4 new trims for £152 when they could just paint the tops of the existing ones.

Anyway, that's it for now. More info when I get the Vinyl cost estimate.

Cheers,

h8wyn.

Spoke to Mike Dobson of Dobson’s Body Shop today about the practicality and cost of painting the pack instead of Vinyl. He wants to remove each item for painting and not sure if he can get the roof soiler off easily. He sounded very positive about doing the rest and that the finish will be as good as the factory finish. He will do some research into how easily the parts can be removed for painting and get back to me next week. I'll keep you posted. Paint or Vinyl? this is the question, maybe the prices will help me decide, time will tell.

Another question you should ask yourself is How long are you going to keep the car for?, imo if it is long term then paint should definatley be the answer.

Even if painting is twice the price, I would not vinyl wrap, it only looks good when first done, it soon starts to peel and you need to be reallly careful when using products and power washing, all said from my own experience.

My experience is the opposite.

The wrap is far more resilient than paint and 12 months on still looks like it did when it was applied.

Pretty sure the paint would have chipped by now, in fact it has on my bumper following new paint a few months ago.

If I had to get it wrapped every year then it'd take three years to offset the cost to paint!

You do need to be careful with the jet wash or lower the power on those bits that's all.

Alternatively paint it and then have Ventureshield applied to the entire front end.

Do they do a matt finish though?

You don't want glossy Ali trim.

You should be able to get matt paint, they can almost make tartan paint nowadays!

Here is the 3M 1080 range, there are 'Matte' finishes, worth looking at the Gray Aluminium: http://multimedia.3m...EsQPbsQPbPPPPPP

I have no updates on prices yet, waiting for some calls this week I hope.

Cheers.

So, I rang the paint man at Dobson's (Audi approved by the way) and he is keen to do the job but he will not be able to remove the roof spoiler for painting. He has been in touch with the Audi workshp and they reckon it is bonded in position and will probably get damaged if he tries to remove it for painting. He's not keen on painting it in position. As for the rest, the front splitter, tops of door handles, rear diffuser rim, he can remove, prepare, paint and refit. As for the price, he reckons somewhre between £300 and £400 but he did say he would cap it at £400. The reason for him not being able to give me a fixed price is because of the unknown time to remove and repleace the front and rear bumper components. He also said if it went well he would only charge me for the time taken, so could be as little as £300. He would need the car for 2 days which gives me a courtesy car problem, he may be able to sort me out with a 'run around'.

Rang the Vinyl, the fitter has had a berevement in the family and my quote is delayed. Will watch this space but I will not ring them again, will wait for them to ring me.

My current thoughts are to get the paint done, it will not be more than £400 and I reckon it will look spot on. I'll update this soon, wheter I hear from the "rapper" of not. In the meantime, safe driving all.
